  • MEDIA PRESS RELEASE FROM THE YARMOUTH FIRE DEPARTMENT REGARDING THE FIRE AT CAPE COD FAMILY RESORT RE: Structure Fire 512 Rt. 28, West Yarmouth             DATE: 10/22/14 EMAIL: jsawyer@yarmouth.ma.us At 4:07PM Yarmouth Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm from 512 Rt. 28, West Yarmouth; Yarmouth Fire Dispatched two engines for this call. Shortly after receiving the alarm call we received a 911 from the Christmas Tree Shop plaza across from the property, the caller reported seeing smoke on the roof of the Cape Cod Family Resort. Yarmouth Fire Dispatch upgraded the call to a first alarm assignment sending multiple engines and ambulances to the scene. Hyannis Fire Department sent an engine on the initial response with the Deputy Fire Chief. A short time later Hyannis sent their Ladder/Tower on a special call from the scene. Shift Commander Gerry Walsh reported fire in two upper rooms, the rear wall and the attic. Shortly after our arrival the fire broke through the roof. Flames were visible in the middle section of the long motel. The quick response from Yarmouth and Hyannis crews kept the fire from spreading throughout the common attic. The fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes and crews performed an extensive overhaul. Crews were on scene for approximately one and a half hours. Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jon Sawyer said, “The fire crews did an excellent job in stopping this fire, their quick actions prevented the fire from spreading throughout the rest of the building”. Mutual aid engine companies from Centerville, Brewster and Dennis covered Yarmouth’s three fire stations; Yarmouth’s citizens were well protected. Yarmouth Police protected fire crews by managing busy traffic on Rt. 28. Yarmouth Fire Prevention Officers, with assistance from the town’s Inspectional Services Department, has started the investigation. The motel was vacant and there were no reported injuries. The fire is still under investigation but believed to be accidental. Jonathan E Sawyer A/Deputy Chief Yarmouth Fire Dept.
